The Return by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Favorite Book of 2015

The Return, follows Seth, from the original series, The Covenant. After the crimes he committed, he is sentenced to serve the Gods of Olympus. Mostly this means tracking down the traitors and administering their punishments. For one year after the original series ends, Seth does his job, living a lonely existence, awaiting his death, where even then his punishment will not end. However, his task changes when Apollo, approaches him after yet another “successful” mission, telling him he must find and protect someone at all costs.

Arriving in Virginia, Seth finds Josie. A college student, struggling to understand her mother’s mental illness and fearing it will be passed down to her. He comes in and flips her world upside down. Soon everything Josie thought and believed in, is changed as she and Seth set out to South Dakota, where she is to be hidden away from the escaped Titans.

This was a re-read for me from last year. I loved it just as much, if not more this time around.

When I found this book just before it was published, I decided to read the original series first. I would recommend doing that before you read this book, but it is not needed. There is enough detail and back story given throughout the book to understand the story line, and more impotently to understand Seth. If you are looking for a great series to read, pick up The Covenant Series, but it is not a must for understanding the new, and dare I say better, series.

One of the things I love about this book, and Jennifer L. Armentrout’s writing as a whole, you aren’t just reading, you have been transported into this mesmerizing world where Greek Gods, still reign supreme.

For main characters you couldn’t ask for two better people. The best way to describe Seth, is as an onion. There are so many layers to pull back, sometimes you wish you had a knife and could cut right to the center, but where’s the fun in that?

Josie is as sweet as they can be. She has a feisty side to her which changes things up a bit and creates amazing banter between her and Seth, but ultimately she is a sweet girl, looking for her place in the world. Her sole motivation is to protect those she loves, at any cost to her. How can you not love her? She has a new world  thrust upon her, shattering her world views, adding to it a fate and destiny she cannot escape. Through it all she takes it in stride, never complaining and accepting it all.

The Return, is a wonderful read, whether it is your first, second, or hundredth time reading it. Pack full of action, witty banter, a budding romance, and dimensional characters, I highly recommend you pick it up and read it.

Another home run for Jennifer L. Armentout. I cannot wait to read the sequel on 23 February!!!

Come back on the 24th, to hear all about Carter Reed.
